How Far in Advance Should You Drop Off Holiday Outfits? A Turnaround Guide

Every year it goes the same way. The invitation arrives, you pull out the good dress or the table linens, and you realize the event is three days away. Holiday weeks fill up fast, and the question we hear most is simple: how long will it take?

Here is the honest answer for the things we clean most, so you can work backward from your date and drop off with room to spare.

Everyday Dry Cleaning: 2 to 3 Business Days

For most items, such as suits, blazers, dresses, coats and pants, plan on 2 to 3 business days. The range depends mostly on whether a garment needs stain treatment. A clean item moves through quickly. One with a stain takes the extra time it needs to be treated properly.

Business days matter here. A Friday drop-off does not count Saturday and Sunday, and a holiday week has fewer working days than it looks like on the calendar.

Need It Faster? Same-Day and Next-Day Service

If you are short on time, we offer same-day and next-day service for a 20% fee.

  • Same-day service is available when you drop off before 9 AM.
  • Next-day service carries the same 20% fee.
  • Rush is best for a small number of items, not a whole closet.

If you are counting on same-day, call ahead. Availability depends on the day’s workload, and a quick call saves you a wasted trip. For more on how rush orders work, see our guide to same-day and express dry cleaning in Sacramento.

What Takes Longer

Some items simply need more time, and the holidays tend to bring them in.

  • Gowns: 3 to 5 days.
  • Drapes: 5 days.
  • Table linens: timing depends on how many pieces you bring. A large order takes about 1 week.
  • Small rugs: 7 days. We do not clean large area rugs.
  • Leather: about 2 weeks.
  • Alterations: 5 to 7 business days. More complicated alterations and dresses take 7 to 10 business days.

If an item needs both cleaning and an alteration, add the two together and start early.

A Simple Drop-Off Plan for the Holidays

You do not need a spreadsheet. Pick the date you need the item and count backward.

  • Everyday outfits for a party or dinner: drop off at least a week ahead. That covers the 2 to 3 business days plus a cushion if anything needs stain treatment.
  • Gowns and formal dresses: allow at least 1 to 2 weeks, longer if there is an alteration.
  • Table linens for a big meal: bring them early. A large order can take a week.
  • Drapes, small rugs and leather: these are the ones to bring in first, since they can take from 5 days to 2 weeks.
  • Last-minute save: same-day or next-day service for 20% more, with the same-day drop-off before 9 AM.

Our hours shift around the holidays, so call before you come in during Thanksgiving week and the last weeks of December.
