Rain Coats and Waterproof Jackets: How to Clean Them Without Ruining the Coating

Sacramento’s rainy season is here, and it is the time of year the rain jacket comes out of the back of the closet. It may smell stale, look dingy, or no longer bead water the way it used to. The way you clean a rain coat matters a great deal, because the wrong method can ruin the very thing that makes it a rain coat.

How Waterproof Coatings Work, and Wear Out

Many rain jackets rely on a thin water-repellent finish on the outside of the fabric, or a waterproof layer inside it. Over time, that finish wears off with use, rubbing, dirt, and body oils. Dirt itself can make the coating look like it has failed, since grime lets water soak in instead of beading.

What Damages Them

  • Detergent residue. Regular detergents can leave a film that attracts water.
  • Fabric softener. This coats the fibers and blocks the water-repellent finish.
  • High heat. Hot water and a hot dryer can damage coatings, seams, and tapes.
  • Rough handling. Wringing and agitation can strain seams and zippers.

Cleaning a Technical Rain Jacket

Check the tag first. If it allows washing, use a gentle cycle, a mild cleaner without fabric softener, and a thorough rinse. Dry according to the tag. Some coatings can be partly refreshed with gentle heat, but only if the tag allows it. If the tag is missing or the jacket is expensive, a professional is the safer choice.

Trench Coats and Lined Coats

A classic trench coat is usually cotton or a blend with a lining, buttons, and a belt, and it often calls for dry cleaning. Lined and structured coats can shrink or distort when washed at home, and the lining may not react the same way as the shell. Professional cleaning keeps the shape and the details.

Reviving Water Repellency, Honestly

Cleaning can bring back some of a coat’s water resistance, because removing dirt and oils helps the finish work again. But a coating that has worn away will not return, and no cleaning can promise that. Re-treating the coat with a water-repellent product may help on some jackets, and it is worth reading the product directions for your fabric.
