Scarves, Gloves and Hats: How to Clean Cold-Weather Accessories

Scarves, gloves, and hats do a lot of work in cold weather. They sit against your neck, hands, and hair for hours, pick up oils and sweat, and get rained on, all season long. They also rarely get cleaned, because it is not obvious how. Here is how to take care of each one.

Why Accessories Get Dirtier Than You Think

Most of what builds up in these pieces is invisible. Skin oils, hair products, sweat, and city grime settle into the fibers and cause stiffness, odor, and dull color. A scarf can look fine and still smell stale after a few weeks of wear.

Wool and Cashmere Scarves

Wool and cashmere are delicate. Hot water, agitation, and heat make them shrink and felt. If the tag allows, hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, press the water out without wringing, and dry flat. When in doubt, have it cleaned professionally. Our cashmere and wool care guide goes into detail on these fibers.

Leather and Lined Gloves

Leather does not like water. It can stiffen, darken, and shrink. Lined gloves add another problem, since the lining and the shell can react differently. For leather gloves, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and let them dry away from heat. For anything valuable or heavily soiled, professional leather care is safer.

Knit and Structured Hats

Knit hats are usually the easiest to clean, but they stretch when wet and can lose their shape if wrung out. Reshape and dry them flat. Structured hats, with a brim or lining, are harder to clean at home and are best left to a professional.

What Never to Put in the Dryer

Do not put wool, cashmere, leather, or lined accessories in the dryer. Heat shrinks and distorts them, and it is the most common reason a good scarf or pair of gloves is ruined.

Storing Them Between Seasons

Clean before you store. Dirt attracts moths and pests, and stains set over the months. Keep scarves folded loosely, gloves flat, and hats stuffed lightly so they hold their shape. Use a breathable bag in a cool, dry place. Our guide to storing sweaters applies to accessories too.

When to Let Us Handle It

If an accessory is cashmere, leather, lined, or has sentimental value, bring it in. We will tell you honestly what is safe, and you will have it back fresh before the cold really sets in.
